Finding XAU/USD in the terminal

XAU/USD is listed as a metals symbol rather than a forex pair, so it sits under the metals group in the Market Watch rather than among the majors. Search the symbol name directly if the group is collapsed, and add it to your watchlist so it stays visible between sessions.

Once the symbol is on the watchlist, open its specification before you trade it. That panel is where the contract size, the pip size and the swap terms for gold are shown, and it is the place to confirm that one lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01 on the account you are logged into. The reference price on this page is about 4275.0, and the live quote in the terminal will differ from it.

The account type you chose at sign-up decides which terminal you are in — MT4, MT5, cTrader or the FxPro app — and the order ticket looks different in each. Learn where the lot field, the stop-loss field and the take-profit field sit before you have a live position open.

Sizing the order with our calculators

Size the order from the risk first, not from the lot field. Decide what a losing trade may cost you in cedis, convert that to the account currency, and let our position size calculator turn it into a lot figure using the distance to your stop. The lot figure is the output of that decision, never the input.

Then check what the position holds. Our margin calculator shows the margin requirement at the applicable cap — about $85.50 for a 0.10-lot gold position — and our pip value calculator shows what one pip of movement is worth at your lot size. With one lot equal to 100 oz and a pip of 0.01, the pip value scales directly with the lots you choose.

Our profit calculator then models the price move to your target in money terms, so the reward side of the trade is a number rather than a hope. Run all four before the ticket is filled: position size, pip value, margin and profit. The sequence takes a minute and it is the difference between a planned trade and a guess.

Setting the exit with the entry

Set the stop-loss and take-profit in the same order ticket as the entry, so the position cannot exist without its exit. A market order that fills before the stop is attached leaves you managing risk by hand, and gold moves fast enough that the hand is slower than the ticket.

Place the stop at the level your position size calculation assumed, not at a round number that happens to be nearby. If the stop has to move further out than the calculation allowed, the lot size comes down to keep the risk the same — the calculators make that adjustment visible before the order is sent.

Where the platform supports it, attach the exit to the entry as a single instruction so a partial fill still carries its protection. Then leave it alone: the trade was sized and exited at the moment of entry, and the swap clock starts running from the fill. Why the Gold Symbol Shows Up More Than Once in the Platform

The gold symbol may appear several times because each listing is a separate contract with its own specification, not a duplicate. In MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app, XAU/USD is often listed alongside variants such as XAUUSD with a suffix or a different contract name. The one you want is the standard spot gold contract where 1 lot equals 100 oz and the pip size is 0.01. Check the specification window before trading, because the symbol code alone does not tell you the contract size or the margin requirement.

The right symbol is the one whose contract specification matches 100 oz per lot and a 0.01 pip. Platforms can show XAU/USD, XAUUSD.a, XAUUSD.pro or similar, and these may differ in contract size, margin currency or trading hours. Open the instrument details and confirm three things: contract size, pip value basis and margin currency. If a listing shows a different contract size, your position sizing and margin calculation will be wrong. On FxPro, use the standard XAU/USD listing and ignore any variant you cannot match to the 100 oz specification.

Several listings exist because brokers serve different account types and liquidity sources from the same platform. A raw or pro account may show a different symbol name for the same metal, and the difference is in the cost structure, not the underlying price. You cannot see the cost from the symbol name, so check the contract specification and the commission or spread disclosure for that specific listing. In Ghana, confirm the entity serving you and then use the XAU/USD listing that matches the 100 oz contract. The regulator caveat applies: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA; confirm any broker on the SEC Ghana licensed operators list.

What One Lot of XAU/USD Actually Represents in the Terminal

One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so the notional value moves directly with the price. At the reference price of about 4275.0, one lot is roughly $427,500 of exposure. That is why gold positions feel large: a 0.10-lot order is still 10 oz, and a 0.01-lot micro order is 1 oz. The contract size is fixed by the instrument, not by your account balance, so the first step in any order is to translate your intended exposure into lots using the 100 oz per lot figure.

The pip value for gold is tied to the 0.01 pip size and the 100 oz contract. One pip on a standard lot is 0.01 in price times 100 oz, which equals $1.00 per pip. On a 0.10-lot position, one pip is $0.10; on a 0.01-lot position, one pip is $0.01. This is the number you use to convert a stop distance in pips into a loss in dollars, and then into cedis at the prevailing rate. Do not guess the pip value from the platform display alone; confirm it against the 100 oz contract size.

Margin is separate from pip value and depends on the leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Ghana. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. That figure is a requirement, not a target, and it scales with position size. A 1.00-lot position would need ten times that margin at the same cap. Before you place the order, check the margin requirement in the platform for the exact lot size you intend to trade, because the cap is a ceiling and your account currency conversion also affects the number.

Placing the Stop-Loss at Entry Instead of Adding It Later

Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket as the entry so the position cannot exist without a defined exit. In MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app, the order ticket has a stop-loss field next to the entry price. Fill it before you press buy or sell. If you enter first and add the stop afterwards, you expose the position to the market for the minutes it takes you to act, and gold can move several dollars in that window. The stop is part of the trade plan, not an afterthought.

The stop distance should be set from the chart structure and then converted into money using the pip value. For XAU/USD, one pip is 0.01, so a stop 200 pips away is $2.00 in price terms. On a 0.10-lot position, that is $20.00 of risk. Decide the cedi amount you are willing to lose first, then work back to the lot size and stop distance. If the required stop makes the loss too large for your account, reduce the lot size rather than widening the stop or removing it.

A stop placed at entry also protects you from the platform gap and from your own hesitation. Gold can react to news with fast moves, and a stop that is already in the system is executed by the broker, not by you. Check that the stop is recorded on the open position after the order fills, because some order types and some connections can drop the attached stop. In Ghana, where mobile money funding is common, the account balance can change between deposit and entry, so confirm the stop and the margin together before you trade.

Reading the Swap Line When a Gold Position Stays Open Overnight

The swap line shows the amount credited or debited to your account for holding a gold position past the daily rollover, and it is not a fixed number. Gold swaps depend on the financing cost of the underlying metal, the broker's markup and the direction of your position. You will see it as a small charge or credit on the position, usually applied once per day at a set rollover time. The exact amount is shown in the platform's instrument specification, and it can change as financing conditions change, so check it before you plan to hold overnight.

The swap line matters because a position held for several days can accumulate a cost that is larger than the original spread. For a 0.10-lot gold position, the daily swap is applied to 10 oz of exposure, and over a week it can add up. The sign matters: long and short positions can have different swap rates, and one side may be charged while the other is credited. Do not assume the swap is negligible; read the specification for XAU/USD on your account and treat the swap as part of the total cost of the trade.

The swap is separate from the margin requirement and from the pip value, and it is charged in the account currency. If you fund with MTN Mobile Money in cedis, the swap will be converted at the platform's rate, so the cedi cost depends on the exchange rate at the time. Before holding a gold position overnight, check the swap in the specification and decide whether the trade thesis justifies the carry. The regulator caveat still applies: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA; confirm any broker on the SEC Ghana licensed operators list.

Checking the Gold Contract Specification Before You Trade

Open the contract specification for XAU/USD before you place any order, because it is the only place that confirms the contract size, pip size, margin currency and swap terms for that listing. In MT4 and MT5, right-click the symbol and choose Specification; in cTrader and the FxPro app, open the instrument details. Confirm that contract size is 100 oz and that the pip size is 0.01. If either number differs, you are looking at a different contract, and your position sizing and pip value calculations will be wrong from the first trade.

The specification also tells you the margin requirement basis, which depends on the leverage cap for the entity serving Ghana. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, but the platform calculates this from the contract size, the price and the cap. Check the margin figure in the order ticket for the exact lot size you intend to trade, because the cap is a ceiling and your account currency conversion also affects the number. Do not rely on a remembered figure from a previous trade.

The specification is where the swap and trading hours are stated, and both affect a gold position. Gold has its own session hours and rollover time, and a position held through rollover incurs the swap shown there. If the specification lists a swap you are not prepared to pay, close the position before rollover or reduce the holding period. In Ghana, confirm the entity serving you and the regulator caveat before funding: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA; confirm any broker on the SEC Ghana licensed operators list.

Keeping Position Size and Margin Consistent Across Gold Listings

Position size and margin must be calculated from the 100 oz contract size, not from the symbol name, because different listings can display different margin requirements. If you trade 0.10 lots on XAU/USD, the exposure is 10 oz and the pip value is $0.10. If a variant listing has a different contract size, the same 0.10 lots would represent a different exposure. Always convert your intended gold exposure into ounces first, then into lots using 100 oz per lot, and check the margin in the order ticket for that specific listing.

Margin consistency matters because the leverage cap for the entity serving Ghana is a ceiling, not a setting. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. If you open several gold positions, the margin is calculated on the total exposure, and the platform may net or aggregate them depending on the account type. Before adding a second position, check the margin used and the free margin in the terminal. Do not assume the margin for two 0.10-lot positions is twice the single figure without checking.

Keep a written record of the contract size, pip value and margin for each gold listing you use, because switching between listings can silently change your risk. If you fund with MTN Mobile Money in cedis, the margin and swap are converted to your account currency, so the cedi amount depends on the exchange rate at the time. Review the specification whenever the platform updates, and confirm the regulator caveat before funding: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA; confirm any broker on the SEC Ghana licensed operators list.

FAQ

Common questions

Where do I find XAU/USD in MT4, MT5 or cTrader?

Open the symbol or market watch list and search for XAU/USD, then add it so it stays visible. On the FxPro app the same symbol appears in the instrument list. Gold is quoted to two decimals, with one pip equal to 0.01, so check the digits on the ticket before you type a price.

How do I size a first gold order without guessing?

Size from the risk, not from the lot box. One standard lot is 100 oz, so 0.10 lots is 10 oz, and a 0.01 pip move is worth a defined amount you can confirm on the pip value calculator. Enter your stop distance and account risk into the position size calculator, then round the result down to a lot the platform accepts.

What does the margin figure mean on a gold ticket?

Margin is the deposit the platform holds while the position is open, not a fee and not your maximum loss. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which the margin calculator reproduces from price and lot size. Free margin below the required level triggers a margin call or stop-out.

How is profit calculated on XAU/USD?

Profit is the price change in dollars per ounce multiplied by the ounces you hold. A 0.10-lot position is 10 oz, so a $1.00 move in gold is $10 before costs. Use the profit calculator to convert that into cedis at your base currency, and remember the spread is paid on entry.

How do pivot points help me place a first gold order?

Pivot points give reference levels for the session, so you can see where price has reacted before rather than picking a level at random. They do not predict direction. Use the pivot points calculator to plot them, then place your stop beyond the level that would prove your idea wrong, and size the order from that stop distance.
